The medal honours Mr Hanaki’s long-term contribution to the growth of the machine tool industry and the benefits Okuma’s activities have brought to society.
The award ceremony was held by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on 27th May 2019 and Mr Hanaki met his Majesty the Emperor on 28th May 2019 at the Imperial Palace.
“I am deeply pleased and honoured to receive this prestigious award," Mr Hanaki said. "Receipt of this award does not simply reflect on me personally – I'm very thankful for the guidance, patronage and full support I have received from so many people and our customers inside and outside Japan. Special thanks go to our domestic and overseas employees who have been working together.”
The Medals of Honour are awarded by the Government of Japan to persons who have contributed significantly to society. Mr Hanaki’s award is a special medal for "the distinguished achievement of the meritorious deed". The order is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment.
