Machining a Gilkes turbine from a solid billet of stainless steel

Watch the machining of Gilkes' Hydropower Turbo Runner from a solid billet of stainless steel on a Mazak 5 axis mill-turn, the Integrex E-1250V/8S.

SolidCAM UK were an integral partner along with Mazak, CGTech, and Iscar Tools.

Using the very straight forward user interface of SolidCAM, while being fully integrated in existing SolidWorks CAD software, gives advanced control over all aspects of tool path and collision checking, with full machine simulation.

Realistic simulation of the complete machine tool enables the collision checking between the tool and the machine components. The software also provided powerful roughing and finishing 3D machining tool paths required with a high level of smoothness, efficiency and smart machining. SolidCAM smooths the paths of both cutting moves and retracts to maintain a continuous machine tool motion, an essential requirement for maintaining higher feed rates and eliminating dwelling.
