A case in point

Tooling from SGS Carbide Tool UK, on display at MACH, has been responsible for a dramatic leap in productivity at Zenith Precision Engineering, the company claims.

The Coventry-based component manufacturer put SGS S-Carb end mills to the test, back to back with equivalents from six other tool companies, in the machining of complex aluminium racing motorcycle components. Zenith's technical manager, Lee Sambrook, reveals that SGS S-Carb emphatically outperformed all other tooling, commenting: “The SGS S-Carb run faster, produced a superior finish, and maintained its cutting performance better than all other tools we evaluated. Typically, the S-Carb has delivered 30% greater tool life and 30% reduction in machining time and as a consequence, we have now adopted SGS tooling for machining these precision components and others in our product portfolio.” SGS Tool's UK managing director, Alan Pearce, adds: “Cost saving and increased productivity, whilst maintaining product quality, is the Holy Grail for manufacturers, especially in this business climate. Consequently, we are delighted that Zenith has adopted SGS S-Carb tooling and is reaping the rewards.” The S-Carb end mill – one of a wide range of high performance solid carbide tools from SGS, is available from UK stock uncoated and coated with Ti-Namite-B, in two and three flute. It is designed for machining aluminium, aluminium alloys, copper, brass, bronze and non-ferrous materials including plastics. In addition to corner radius, square end three flute, S-Carb is also presented to market in both imperial and metric sizes, whilst SGS' tool re-sharpening service continues to keep customer costs down.
