The UK’s largest solar car port has been installed at Bentley’s Crewe factory headquarters, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable energy.

This means all electricity used to manufacture every Bentley will be solar or certified green.

The installation of 10,000 solar panels, which have a capacity of 2.7MW, cover 1,378 car parking spaces and an area of 16,426m² – which is enough to cover two football pitches.

Commenting on Bentley’s investment, Peter Bosch, Bentley’s member of the board for manufacturing, said:

It’s important to look ahead and prepare the business for the next 100 years by investing significantly in our products, our people and our site infrastructure. This includes new initiatives that reinforce our commitment to the environment.

Whether this is introducing alternative powertrain technologies in future models, or our award-winning work to reduce the environmental impact of our factory, these sustainable measures strengthen our desire to lead the way in sustainable luxury mobility.

This news comes as Britain's parliament declared a symbolic climate change "emergency" in a nod to an increasingly vocal activist movement. Britain currently aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by 80% compared with 1990 levels by 2050.

"The UK can end its contribution to global warming within 30 years by setting an ambitious new target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 (on 1990 levels)," the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) report said.

The government-commissioned report said the new target is achievable with existing technology but can only be met if the government ramps up climate policies.

More renewable and low-carbon electricity would be needed to meet the UK's target, and technology to capture and store or use carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sectors must be adopted, the report added.
