The CBI commented on the announcement by BMW that it will invest £500 million towards the production of the next generation of the Mini in the UK, safeguarding 5,000 jobs.
John Cridland, CBI director-general, said: “This substantial investment by BMW is a massive vote of confidence in UK innovation and skills in the highly-competitive automotive sector. The securing of 5,000 jobs is just the boost that we need at this crucial time in the recovery.
“It's fantastic news that the next generation of iconic Minis will be manufactured by Britain's highly skilled automotive workforce in the country where they originated in 1959.”
