New machine builds on past success

The new DMP 70 from DMG Mori, unveiled at the recent Pfronten open house in January, aims to provide optimum productivity from the smallest footprint.

As the successor to the successful Milltap 700 with its more than 3,000 machines installed in the marketplace, the new DMP 70 from DMG Mori – unveiled at the recent Pfronten open house in January – aims to provide optimum productivity from the smallest footprint.

Taking up just 4.2m² of real estate, it is around 10% smaller than the Milltap 700. DMG Mori has designed the compact production machine for applications in medical technology and general machining as well as the aerospace sector and other demanding industries.

Travel paths of 700 x 420 x 380mm and the optional integrated swivel/rotary table enable 5-axis simultaneous machining of a wide range of components and automation solutions such as the workpiece handling WH 3 Cell – shown at the Pfronten open house – can be connected flexibly from the right, left or front of the machine.

From a productivity perspective, the DMP 70 offers metal removal rates 10% higher than its predecessor. A wide grey cast iron machine bed, enlarged installation footprint and 35mm linear guideways facilitate 30% faster machining capabilities. Additional stability has been achieved through the high-strength spindle – thanks to higher spring preload – and the sturdy tool magazine with metal clips.

With its ergonomic ‘Stealth’ design, the DMP 70 is user-friendly with steep covers in the work area and (optionally automatable) inside doors preventing chips from leaving the machine. An optimised cooling concept provides improved thermal stability and overall accuracy is claimed to be 60% higher than the Milltap 700.

Excellent dynamics are provided courtesy of 60m/minute rapid traverses and up to 2g acceleration. In its standard version the DMP 70 is equipped with an inline spindle with a speed of 10,000rpm and 78Nm torque. Rapid tool change and chip-to-chip times of 1.5 seconds also play their part in ensuring high levels of productivity. The optimally accessible tool magazine has space for up to 15 tools with lengths up to 250mm, 25 tool pockets possible as an option.

The DMP 70 has a SLIMline Siemens multi-touch control with Operate 4.8. The 19 inch high resolution provides an easy to view user interface and 3D control technology enables users to simulate machining in advance.

An extensive portfolio of options rounds off the DMP 70 offer: high-speed spindles, various table configurations as well as coolant systems and chip conveyors are available. The optional WH 3 Cell has a space requirement of just 8.8m².
