UMC-5X makes its UK exhibition debut

Breaking with tradition the UMC-5X – The Challenger, will be the only machine on stand B49, giving visitors the opportunity to inspect the machine in detail and discuss the high specification of this competitively-priced machine. The addition of a full simultaneous 5-axis, gantry-style, machining centre with a trunnion table to its range, is another example of how XYZ is not only expanding its selection of machines, but also continuing to deliver high levels of functionality and performance at a competitive price point for its customers. The UMC-5X includes standard features that would be expected on machines costing considerably more.

The specification of the UMC-5X ranging from the accuracy and performance of the A- and C-axes, through to the innovative control features presented by the Siemens 840DSL Shopmill control (Heidenhain iTNC 640 HSCI option) has resulted in a machine that delivers for a wide range of users, from the aerospace, medical, automotive, mould and die, and general engineering sectors.

The major advantage of the UMC-5X’s design is in its trunnion table configuration: when the table is tilted 90° towards the rear (component facing forward), there remains 500mm of Y-axis travel forward of the table surface. This is much greater than many competitor machines, including those that quote the same axis travels as the UMC-5X, allowing larger workpieces to be machined.

Other key features are its gantry-type design, which adds greater rigidity and performance; C-axis rotation via a direct drive, low maintenance, high torque motor, giving 90rpmmin; ±120° on the tilting A-axis, with 2.5 sec for full movement; front loading for ease of access; high accuracy Heidenhain linear scales on the X-, Y- and Z-axes; high precision rotary encoders mounted on rotation pivot points on the A- and C-axes; 36m/minute feedrates in X-, Y- and Z-axes; 600mm axis travel in X and Y (500mm in Z).

The control systems have the capability of Tool Centre Point Control and Kinematic functions during simultaneous 5-axis machining for improved surface finish and accuracy; and they also feature built-in thermal growth compensation. The standard spindle is a 35kW in-line direct drive, water-cooled, unit with either 12,000 or 15,000rpm. There is an option to specify a motorised spindle with 25kW providing either 18,000 or 24,000rpm.
