Which way to turn

Global Machinery Services (SPC) has been awarded the UK agency for a range of Italian manufactured flatbed manual and CNC lathes.

South of England-based, Global Machinery Services (SPC) has been awarded the UK agency for a range of Italian manufactured flatbed manual and CNC lathes.

Based in the hills of Tuscany, located near Florence, Comev Spa has been producing lathes since 1958 when, as a thirteen strong cooperative, COMM produced the first machine.

Today, over fifty years on, the cooperative spirit continues throughout Comev. The dedication and skill that the founders used to set-up the company along with Italian design has become fundamental in the evolution of the brand to ensure longevity for many years.

“From the entry level, Comev MT series of conventional machines starting with a 360mm diameter swing and up to 2,000mm between centres, the conventional machine range extends to the Titano T series featuring a 1,400mm swing by up to 12,000mm between centres,” commented Global Machinery Services' managing director, Gerry Shrimpton.

“The range of CNC machines is even larger with the latest Urano series having a swing capacity of over 2,000mm and up to 12,000mm between centres,” Mr Shrimpton added. “Spindle torque in excess of 20,000Nm at low speed and a milling capacity to match a vertical machining centre allow the Comev Urano to machine the most difficult of large workpieces.”

“The ability to offer a western European, 100% solely designed and manufactured range of lathes where customers can be assured of build quality, along with the highest levels of service and support were key points in offering the Comev range of machines” revealed technical director, Peter Cook. “The factory can easily be reached in a few hours and dealing with a manufacturer, that produces most of its product in-house allows for faster machine and spare part response.

“The inherent strength of a flatbed machine over other designs really becomes apparent when machining large workpieces,” he continued. “Both the turning and tooling cutting forces are absorbed directly by the cast iron bed, which, as you would expect from an Italian manufacturer, is weathered for 12 months.”

Comev's sales director, Luigi Frosinini stated: “The machine tool and market knowledge that Gerry and Peter bring to Comev will result in an exciting partnership and allow the range of Comev lathes to be seen in the United Kingdom.”
“Global Machinery Services (SPC) will be appointing key distributors in the UK as well as certain other identified markets,” Mr Shrimpton concluded. “Local showrooms to exhibit the products and show the outstanding build quality of the Comev machines are a must in today's marketplace.”
