The site is where the vacuum cleaner manufacturer was designing an electric car until the plan was abandoned in 2019.
Engineers at Dyson designed the ventilator from scratch in just 10 days, ready to be put into production from next week.
“The speed at which Dyson has been able to develop this ventilator is impressive,” said Mark Smith, partner - innovation incentives at Ayming UK. “Dyson has always been an R&D intensive company, meaning it already had the resources for a speedy design and roll out process. Although these are exceptional circumstances, it really goes to show how having a streamlined R&D operation can deliver tangible results, and ahead of competitors."
5,000 of the devices have been funded by company founder Sir James Dyson, and it is expected 4,000 of those will be sent to other countries.
In a global email to staff, the billionaire business owner said: “The race is now on to get it into production.
"I am proud of what Dyson engineers and our partners at TTP have achieved. I am eager to see this new device in production and in hospitals as soon as possible. This is clearly a time of grave international crisis, I will therefore donate 5,000 units to the international effort, 1,000 of which will go to the United Kingdom.”
The UK government put a call out to UK industry to increase the number of ventilators to 30,000.
The collaboration between the government and the manufacturing industry is coordinated by three government departments, alongside the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.
